July 2020 Monthly Meeting – DMR & Hotspots

Join us on Thursday, July 30th at 7pm for the online monthly meeting of the Fayette County Amateur Radio Club. Our guest speaker will be George Fenn, W4VBD.

Here is George’s synopsis of the presentation:

This will cover DMR, some of it’s history, and resources for further research. Since a lot of information is readily available on DMR, this presentation will focus mainly on the setup. This will include the setup for a hotspot, and specifically focus on the creation of a code plug. This presentation would help with the understanding of that process flow and trying to demystify that part of the DMR landscape. This will be done using my own experience with getting my DMR setup working as a backdrop.

Biography of George Fenn, W4VBD

QTH is Fayetteville. Originally from Oklahoma, we moved to Georgia in 1993 for my new job.

I was first licensed in 2007. As part of teaching the Radio Merit Badge for my Boy Scout Troop, I passed my Technician exam. This was done mainly as a birthday present to my Dad, W5VBD (sk), who was first licensed in 1951. I had been around ham Radio all my life because of my Dad, but it had never really been an interest of mine until then. Even though I had passed my Technician, I never did anything with it. In 2017 I upgraded to General and was able to talk to Dad on the radio who was in a nursing home in Oklahoma. This was done using the internet service RemoteHamRadio.

My interests are mainly HF, where I am on 40M SSB the most since that is what works best at my QTH, but I am on 20m sideband some as well. I enjoy ragchewing and working special event stations. I also listen on the 521 repeater on 2m and enjoy DMR through my ZumSpot hotspot. This year I upgraded to Amateur Extra and also received my accreditation as a VEC.
